Goal
Decades of nation-wide research in youth sports have consistently shown that friendship is one of the most critical factors in creating a positive and lasting experience for young athletes. Studies repeatedly demonstrate that playing alongside friends, classmates and trusted coaches not only makes the game more enjoyable but also fosters a stronger sense of community, boosts self-confidence, and extends participation over time.
We also value and encourage coaches who cultivate strong team cultures, knowing that these environments naturally inspire loyalty and create lasting connections for players and families.
At the same time, we are committed to maintaining competitive balance within the league, ensuring that every player has an opportunity to develop their skills and enjoy fair, engaging matchups. Striking a balance between these priorities—friendships, team loyalty, and competitive fairness—is at the heart of our team formation policy.
Approach
For divisions 8U and above, teams are formed through an evaluation and draft process. In an effort to support the ideals of playing with friends and competitive balance, coaches may protect up to a maximum of five players on their team. However, these protected players will count as their first five draft picks. New coaches or coaches who choose to protect fewer players will begin drafting earlier in the selection process, ensuring fairness and maintaining competitive balance across the league.
By thoughtfully addressing each of these important needs, our policy creates a framework where players can thrive, coaches can build meaningful team cultures, and the league can maintain its integrity and inclusivity for all participants.
