What are the divisions for Spring and Fall baseball?

DivisionAge RangeSummary of basic rules
4U3-4Young players are introduced to the basics of baseball. Each player will hit off of a tee using a specially designed level-1 safety ball.
6U5-6Players learn the basics of baseball. Each player will hit off of a tee using a specially designed level-1 safety ball.
8U7-8Players will be hitting balls pitched to them by their own coach. Players can strike out, but cannot walk, given that their own coach is pitching. Lead-offs & steals are not allowed.
10U9-10This level is more like “real” baseball. Players pitch, runners are allowed to lead off and steal bases, pitchers can pick off runners, and can be charged with balks. Players will strike out on three strikes and will walk with four balls.
12U11-12Most MLB rules apply. The bases and pitching distances are larger than the 10u field, but smaller than a high school field.
14U13-14Most MLB rules apply. The bases and pitching distances are larger than the 12u field, but smaller than a high school field.

What division should my player sign up for?

The PONY national organization determines “league age” based on the player’s age on April 30th – see here for the baseball age chart.

Note: Since the Fall Season has a developmental focus, players are eligible to stay in the same division as they were in the Spring or play “ahead” and get a preview of the league they will be eligible for the following Spring Season.

Can baseball players “play up” a division?

Baseball players can play up one division.

What gear will we need?

Delwood will provide each player with a jersey and baseball cap. Families are responsible for providing their child with baseball pants, socks, belt, and shoes (cleats are recommended). Your coach will let you know the color of the baseball pants, belt, and socks.

Your child will also need a bat, glove, and batting helmet. Coaches will have extras available for each team that can be shared among players who do not have their own.

What type of bat is required for Delwood Sports?

Delwood Sports follows Pony rules.

  • For the 4u – 12u divisions, all bats must be certified with USA Bat licensing mark.
  • The bat diameter cannot be more than 2 ⅝”.
  • 2-3⁄4” barrel bats are prohibited in all divisions of PONY Baseball.
  • The 14u division is allowed to play with either a USA Bat or a (-3) BBCOR bat.
